New construction at Grimma's headquarters

October 2011

The long planned extension of the production and management wing at our headquarters has begun. This will be our company's third largest construction project here at the Broner Ring in Grimma. In 2002 our new production hall and management wing were officially opened. A second production hall was completed in 2008. The new construction project will extend the production area by almost 2,200 square metres. The introduction of new manufacturing technologies will also create new jobs.

One of the functions of the extended management wing will be to create additional space for our engineering and technical personnel. The research and development division will also move to the new wing.

These investments come in response to our company's continued growth and the increasing number of orders. All of the contracts for the construction and technical equipment have already been awarded. Completion of the new building is planned for April 2012.

ESA Teams Successful at Mulde Valley Triathlon

August 2011

This year's 8th Annual Mulde Valley Triathlon in Grimma also played host to the German Championships. The German Triathlon League alone was represented by a total of 48 teams on the starting line. The participation of the triathlon elite made this major sporting event particularly memorable.

Four ESA teams competed for victory in the Veolia Team Triathlon on Aug. 28th. The weather did its part; temperatures were ideal for the competition. The competition began with the swimming stage in the Mulde River. Next, the cyclists entered the race, followed by the runners. Our triathletes were able to make the 12th, 18th, 19th and 26th places - a remarkable achievement considering that thirty-two teams were participating in the competition!

As cosponsor, our company once again supported the event and our teams. ESA Grimma would like to take this opportunity to once again thank all of the volunteers and the triathletes for making this event such a great experience!

ESA Closes Deal on Antarctic Research Base

May, 2011

ESA Grimma has accepted a new challenge:
A Finnish company has ordered 12 completely assembled and equipped panels for a switching system. Among other features, the finished system will be equipped with control assemblies for a load and energy management system. This doesn't sound like anything special so far, unless you consider the conditions at the planned installation site: the new Indian research base in the Antarctic.

This station has recently been bought by NCAOR, the Indian Antarctic research institute. Various suppliers deliver the individual components of the station, which will undergo assembly testing on the premises of the Duisburg freeport starting in May.

The energy for the station will be supplied by five wind turbines and three cogeneration plants, which sets a number of special requirements for the control of energy flows and for load management. For example, a safe and reliable distribution and control of the electrical energy is absolutely critical – a challenging task for all participants in the project.

The switching system including its control and automation features, as well as a battery-based uninterruptible power supply for emergencies will be pre-installed into special containers at our site in Grimma until the end of July, 2011. The complete equipment for the station will be transported by sea from Rotterdam. In Cape Town, the containers will be transferred to the ice breaker "Ivan Papanin" and shipped to the Larsemann Hills, a region close to the South Pole and facing the Australian continent. The last mile will be completed by cargo helicopter.

At least one ESA employee will participate in the installation and commissioning of the system in the Antarctic, starting in September. His stay in the ice will last for about 120 days – the estimated on-site installation time for the research base. Accommodation will be in containers, and the only contact to the outside world will be via satellite phone.
